Letter 156

From Quebec To her son. 11 August 1654.
The Iroquois ambassadors in the Ursuline Parlour.

The Iroquois and their principal captains visited us every time they came. They were astonished and delighted to hear our little Indians sing so well. For Indians love singing and they rewarded them by singing another song in their own way but not according to the French beat. But if they were glad I was more so to see the Indian girls so sociable and to hear them sing the praises of God in their barbarous language.
